Pink galaxy circle with geometric mountains
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A circular design shows a pink and purple galaxy sky with pale glowing patches and small white dots for stars. The lower part of the circle is filled with black linework, including triangular geometric mountains, hatched shading and dark pine tree shapes. Thin arrows, dotted lines and small circles extend outward from the edge of the circle on a cream background.

The big top had been a blue sky for twenty-two years, until Mr Haddow decided the blue looked tired and told me to paint something that would fill the Thursday seats. I had half a tin of magenta left from a fairground job in Rhyl and a pot of violet gone thick in the lid, and nothing else but a canvas ceiling the size of a chapel roof, pegged between two lorries in a field above Llandudno.

I worked at night, when the wind dropped and the moths came to the lamp. I dabbed the pale patches with a rag so they'd look like something burning far off, and I flicked the stars on with an old toothbrush, swearing every time I hit my own thumb. Dafydd had sawn the mountains from the flats of the Alpine act and I painted them black and hatched them with a ruler, because his triangles had never sat right on the sheet. The pines were the stencils from the lion tamer's old cage cloth, and they went in last, dark as a row of people waiting for a bus.
Nessa, who flew on the high trapeze and never once looked down, stood under it on the final Thursday and asked where the stars came from. I told her they came from my thumb. She laughed, then went quiet, and so did the crowd when the lights went down and the pink came up from the spotlights.
We struck the tent the next morning. Mr Haddow rolled the sky around a cardboard tube and put it on the back of the lorry, and I watched from the hill as the field emptied. Somewhere below, a boy I didn't know was holding his mother's hand and pointing up at a patch of cloud the colour of ours.
