Crocodile head on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed crocodile head with its jaws open is tattooed along the arm, facing towards the elbow. The scales, teeth and snout are rendered with fine shading and stippled texture, with some looser linework fading into the skin around the top of the head. The image is in black and grey and is taken at an angle against an indoor background.

The lake had been dry for eleven years when Dessie Marr started swearing there was still a crocodile in it. He said so across the counter at the servo on Salt Pan Road, between mouthfuls of stewed tea, and nobody paid him much mind until the Tuesday he backed his ute up to the pumps and wrestled a rusted drum onto the concrete.

Inside, wrapped in wet sacking, was a head. Not a whole animal, just the skull and the jaw, cured in brine and still bristling with teeth as thin and pale as nails. "Came up out of the cracks at the north bore," he said, "like it was waiting on rain." I put my spanner down. The hide had gone the colour of old sump oil, and where the flesh had drawn back the bone showed through like frost on a windscreen.
I asked him why he'd hauled it into town. He shrugged and said his brother had driven that track every week for thirty years and never once got bogged, then one March he simply didn't come back, and the only thing left on the tray was this. Dessie thought the crocodile had been keeping watch. I thought he'd been drinking since breakfast. Then the lower jaw creaked open another inch, and neither of us said anything for a while.
At dusk I drove him back out along the corrugations, the drum knocking against the tailgate the whole way. At the cracked clay he tipped it over and the head slid out into the dust, mouth wide, facing the setting sun. By morning the wind had filled its teeth with sand, and the tracks Dessie's ute left were already gone.
