Humpback whales and coral on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two humpback whales swim through a shaded ocean, one turning upward with its head and pectoral fin visible, and the other cresting along the arm. The whales are rendered in detailed realistic shading with fine texture on the throat grooves and skin, and pale highlights on the fins. Soft grey background washes and tube coral at the lower edge frame the scene across the arm.

The kettle had boiled dry twice before Captain Ruiz noticed the whales, and it was me who saw them first, through the galley porthole, a grey back rolling up out of the swell like a wet sail being hauled. I was scraping porridge off the pan for six men who would not eat it anyway. Ruiz came down the ladder with his cap in his hand, which he never did in my galley, and pressed his palm flat against the glass without a word.

Out past the bow there were two of them. One lifted its head clear of the water with its long pale fin spread like an oar, the other slid under the hull so close I felt it as a hum through the lino. Coral grew on the old chart cabinet in the corner, a joke Ruiz's father had brought back from Belize in a jam jar. When the second whale turned I could see the barnacles on its throat and the grooves there pulsing as it breathed.

He said his father used to claim whales remembered the names of ships that had hunted them, and that this was why the old captains never painted their hulls blue. I told him the porridge was ruined and he could have it anyway. We drifted for an hour with the engine cut, the bridge radio gone quiet, the pair of them circling the bow like they were checking the paintwork.

When the bigger whale finally sounded, its tail lifted pale and wide, and the smaller one followed it down into the green dark like a sentence finishing itself. Ruiz put his cap back on. Forty minutes late, he said. I said the pan was still on the hob if he wanted it, and he laughed, and neither of us went to start the engine.
