T-rex skull on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of a Tyrannosaurus rex skull in profile, with its jaws open and teeth visible. The skull is built from stippled dots and fine lines, with darker dotted shading in the eye socket, cheek and open mouth. The design is in black and grey ink, centred on a pale forearm against a plain light background.

You reach the top of Carrow Pass with the wind already pulling at your hood, and the shale gives way under your boots every third step. Behind you your brother is swearing at the mule. Ahead, the rock face has split like a loaf, and something pale sits in the crack, crusted with grit and roughly the size of a wheelbarrow.

Dad always said the dead don't wait for you to be ready. You kneel and brush the dust off with your sleeve. It is a skull, long and narrow, jaws hinged open as if it were mid-complaint, with rows of teeth like a comb of bent nails. The eye socket is a black pit that swallows the afternoon light and gives none of it back. You count the teeth because counting is steadier than thinking. Forty-one on the upper jaw, and the last one snapped off clean.
Your brother arrives, breathing hard, and goes quiet. "We tell the museum in Kendal," he says. "Obviously." But you are already measuring the gap in the rock and wondering how a creature that size ever wedged itself halfway up a mountain, and whether it was looking at something when it died, the way it seems to be looking now, mouth wide, at the valley below.
In the car park at the bottom, the signal bars flicker and your photograph loads: a skull in profile, teeth bared at the sky. Your brother reads the caption aloud over your shoulder. Nobody has ever said what it was roaring at. You decide it was the weather coming, and you start the engine before it does.
