Colour tattoo of a cross-stitch style geometric pattern covering a forearm, with red, teal, green and yellow diamond and zigzag motifs.

Cross-stitch style geometric forearm tattoo

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the forearm in bands of repeating geometric motifs, including diamonds, zigzags and stepped shapes, each built from small square marks that resemble cross-stitch embroidery. The work uses dense, even fills rather than shading, with red, teal, green and yellow ink alongside black outlines. The arm is shown against a dark background with a dark top and jeans in the lower corner, keeping the pattern as the main focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sail loft above the fish market smells of tar and wet canvas, and your aunt Hanne has already ruled the grid onto the cloth in blue chalk. "Count from the selvedge," she says, "not from your hopes." You thread a needle with red wool, the colour your grandmother always used for borders, and begin the first diamond: four stitches up, four across, a step inward like stairs that lead nowhere in particular.

The boats come in with holes the size of a fist, and every patch is a small argument with the weather. Hanne taught you that a cross is only two diagonals agreeing to meet. Teal for the water off Skarn, green for the hill path, yellow for the lamp in the harbour master's window that never goes out. You stitch through the dinner bell, through the gulls, through a November gale that tears the mainsail of the Ingrid Vik clean along its seam.

Hanne's hands start to shake in March, so you keep the loft open alone. Fishermen bring their sails and you return them with that dense, even fill that makes a worn thing look deliberate. A ferry boy asks why you don't use a machine. You show him the zigzag band, each step counted so the pattern holds even where the cloth has been folded a hundred times.

When the last bolt is hung, the sampler stays on the wall by the dormer window. In the late light the red diamonds throw their small shadows across the sail spread on the floor, and you notice you have stopped counting.
