Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand and wrist are shown with solid black bands wrapping the wrist and a large mandala design on the back of the hand. The mandala is built from fine radiating lines, dotwork shading and petal-like shapes, with bold filled bands above it. The image is in black ink only, shown against a dark background with the hand in the centre of the frame.

The lift at Harrow Point only went as high as the seventh floor, and everyone who lived there knew why. Before the concrete was poured, the surveyor's daughter walked the site with a length of rope and a tin of black paint, marking the ground where the old orchard had stood. Her father laughed at her and built over it anyway, but the lines stayed in the soil and came up through the tiles of the lobby, spoke by spoke.

Teodor, who swept that lobby for the council, said the lines were a map. Each petal pointed at a window where somebody had once been lonely enough to leave a light on. When the power failed for three days one winter, he took a torch and walked the spokes out from the centre, counting doors. At the seventh spoke he found a stairwell painted in bands of black, wrapped round the building like a cuff, and at the top of it a skylight with no glass in it.
Through the skylight the stars lay thick as salt. He stretched out on the cold concrete and traced them with a stub of chalk, joining each point to the next until the whole sky carried the same pattern as the floor below. When the power came back the lift stopped at the seventh floor as it always had, and nobody complained about the stairs any more.
In the mornings, the tenants say, the tiles still shine where his chalk touched them, and the lines run from the door to the stair like a wrist turning toward the light.
