Dotwork mandala on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala fills the forearm, with a central radial flower built from stippled dots and fine lines. Symmetrical ornamental panels, small star-like motifs and leaf shapes extend outwards towards the edges of the arm. The tattoo is rendered entirely in black and grey, with shading created by dense dots that fade toward the lighter areas of the design.

The rain had come up the cut overnight, and by the time I had the kettle on the stove in the back cabin the water was lapping the lock gates. Aunt Mira never let weather stop her work. She sat on the cabin step with a tin of Indian ink, a steel nib and a sheet of brown paper pinned to the roof, and she made dots. Thousands of them. "Don't draw the shade," she told me once. "Dot it. Let the eye do the sum."

She painted roses and castles on half the boats between Oxford and Reading, but she was never happy with a flat panel. Her own cabin door carried a mandala, a starburst of petals with ornamental arms reaching out to the frame, and small five-pointed stars at each corner like pins holding it down. She worked on it every winter. The centre was the densest part, a flower so fine that from the towpath it looked like smoke, and the dots thinned as they moved outward until the leaves went white as the paper.
When the barge was sold to a man from Leeds who wanted it varnished pine, I came to fetch her things. The door was already off its hinges, leaning against the bank in the drizzle. I ran my thumb over the centre and found the dots stood slightly proud, a little ridge of ink built up by a thousand small taps. The man from Leeds had offered to sand it back, and I had said no before I knew I was going to.
I didn't take the door. I took a clean nib and a jar of ink and sat on the lock beam until the light went, dotting a small star onto the back of my own hand, one point at a time, and waiting for the rain to ease.
