Crossed ornate skeleton keys
Black and grey · Flash
Two large skeleton keys cross diagonally at their shafts, with their ornate bows at the top and bitted ends at the bottom. The linework is fine and dense, with stippled and hatched shading that gives the metal a silvery, engraved appearance. The image is set on a plain white background in black and grey only.

The smith of Ushan made two keys for the river granary and hung them on one nail, so that no man could open the door with only one of them. He worked them in silver, because his grandmother had said iron forgets its shape in the wet. He curled the bows like rams' horns and cut the bits with a fox's face, so that a thief would laugh before he saw the lock.

In the year the rains failed, the grain began to thin, and the magistrate sent for the keys. Their keeper, a boy named Dashan who had carried one of them since he was eleven, swore the nail was never bare. The magistrate turned both keys in the lamplight and found the shafts worn bright in the same place, where two hands had crossed them on the way out.
Dashan and his cousin Ilse had been feeding the families along the reed lanes for a month. They measured the sacks by the bushel and left them on doorsteps marked with a fox-faced key scratched into the lintel. They had never once opened the door alone. The magistrate asked who else in Ushan had two hands to spare, and no one answered him.
He had the seal broken and the ledger brought out. In its margin, in the smith's careful hand, was a note: the keys open the granary only when they are crossed. The magistrate looked at the two children standing in the doorway, let the grain go out to the lanes, and hung the keys back on the nail himself, crossed, the way his own mother had hung a wet cloak to dry.
