Marguerite had been drawing the crossroads at Haddon Lock for eleven years, and the village still could not agree on where its roads began. The carrier said the north lane started at the chapel gate. The miller swore it began at the pump. Marguerite laid her ruler across the vellum, pressed the brass compass pin into the centre and drew the ring she trusted, the one with the beaded edge that the old well-keepers had cut into the stone.

Four ways left the ring. Eastward ran the cart track that carried the wool, ending in a leaf-shaped wicket where the merchant kept his scales. West ran a lane with three coiled scrolls of hedge, which no one used because it went nowhere but to a sheep dip. North and south stopped in starbursts, whose points she inked with the finest nib she owned. The surveyors at Brackley had told her a road that ends in a star is a road that ends in the sky, and she had laughed at them.

On the last morning of the survey the carrier came to her window to watch her finish. He asked which road was the true one. She said none of them, that the ring was the true one, because every lane had to pass through it to reach anything at all. He frowned at the drawing for a long time, then took off his hat, said nothing, and went back out to his horses.

Marguerite sat a while after he had gone. Then she left the ring open at the top, where the north lane came in, and blotted the ink so the road could still be walked by anyone who chose to start from the pump.
