Celtic knot shamrock line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a shamrock with three heart-shaped leaves and a knotted stem, drawn in uniform black outline. The leaves and stem are filled with interlaced Celtic knotwork made of continuous over-and-under lines. The design is shown in flat black on white with no shading, and it is centred in the frame.

Our Nan always said the trouble with a shamrock is that it never stops. You think you've found the end of the thread, and there it goes again, under and over, under and over, like the lanes in Tredegar when the rain had them running backwards. My grandfather Owen worked the Deep Pit for thirty-one years, and on the night the lamp went out at the face he sat in the dark and traced a clover on the coal dust with his thumb, the way his mother had drawn them on the back step with a bit of chalk.

He told the lads afterwards that the knot never once let go of him. Three hearts, one stem, and the lines went round the hearts and back into themselves until you couldn't say which one was the start. Nobody believed him until the cage came up and the men counted heads twice, then counted again, because there was one more than there should have been and nobody could say who it was. Owen swore it was a boy in a cap, and a shamrock was growing out of his collar.
They never found the boy. The pit closed in the spring and the chalk clover on the step washed away with the first real rain. My nan kept the story going at the kitchen table for forty years, and every time she reached the part about the extra man she would stop, pour the tea, and say the knot is still down there, love, going over and under, waiting for someone to follow the line the right way round.
