Engraved anchor wrapped in rope
Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large anchor with a rope coiled around its shaft fills the frame, with a second anchor fluke partly visible at the lower right edge. The design is built from fine, dense black linework with stippled shading that gives the metal and rope a vintage engraved look. The image is black and grey with a soft vignette around the edges.

The anchor came up off the Dogger Bank on a wet Tuesday, and Harold Pell swore it was the same one his father had dropped in 1931, though nobody could prove it either way. The men hauled it onto the quay at Whitby with the rope still knotted to the shank, grey with weed and smelling of cold iron, and the gulls went quiet for a minute as if they'd seen it before.

The rope had gone soft as bread where it dragged along the seabed, but the hitch was still sound. His daughter Nell, who kept the chandlery ledger and trusted nothing she couldn't add up, said a knot that held for ninety years was either luck or a dead man's work. Harold said the dead man was his own father, who tied a bowline the way other men signed wills, and he'd not have it cut to sell the iron for scrap.
Nell took the rope off the shank that night by lamplight, because the knot wanted patience and she had plenty of that. Under the last coil, pressed into the rust where no tide could reach it, someone had scratched two letters and a date. M.P. Then, smaller, HOME. Her mother's initials. Her mother had never once mentioned a ship, only the tide tables and the price of coal.
In the morning Harold found the rope coiled neatly on the step of the back door, the bowline retied and pulled tight. Nell was already down at the slipway with the anchor in the barrow, and she waved him over without looking up, like a woman with a letter to post.
