Small lettering tattoo on a thigh with a yellow and orange crown above the black words I'll eat you up, I love you so.

Crown and quote tattoo on a thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A small crown with an orange and yellow fill and dark outline sits above two lines of black capital lettering reading I'LL EAT YOU UP and I LOVE YOU SO. The text is set in a bold, simple sans serif with slightly uneven strokes, and the crown has a loose, hand-drawn outline. The tattoo sits on the side of a bare thigh against pink fabric, with a soft, warm-toned blurred background.

The rain has turned the cobbles of Brindle Market into a black mirror, and you are standing under the sagging tarpaulin of Pruett's fish stall, holding a crate of split plums and arguing with a man who has no interest in plums. Behind you, your nephew Teddy, in a yellow anorak two sizes too big, has been roaring at the pigeons for ten minutes, and nobody has told him to stop.

Ada from the flower stall has wrapped a bunch of wet carnations in newspaper and is telling him the wild things have all gone home for their tea. He doesn't believe her. He climbs onto an upturned bucket and declares himself king of the gutters, and the gutters, to be fair, look like a kingdom with their little rivers running towards the drains.

You tell Pruett to keep his fish and his opinions. You dig the tin crown out of your coat pocket, the one with the bent point that your nan wore at the pageant in 1974, and you set it on Teddy's dripping hair. He stops roaring. He looks up at you with the terrible seriousness of the very young and asks whether a king is allowed to be hungry. You say a king is always hungry, and that a king who shares his plums is the only sort worth the trouble of a crown.

He bites into a plum so ripe the juice runs down his wrist and into his sleeve. "I'll eat you up," he tells you through a mouthful of rain and sugar. "I love you so," you say back, and the market goes on getting wet around the two of you, as if it has all the time in the world.
