Script lyric quote across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a woman seen from behind, with blonde hair falling over one shoulder. A black script quotation reads in three lines across the upper back between the shoulder blades. The lettering is crisp and even, with varied line weight, and the background is dark, so the ink stands out clearly against the skin.

The last train through Hollin Cross ran at ten past eleven, and nobody waited for it anymore. Old Mrs Teague kept the level crossing gate by hand, and every night she watched the lamps of the goods trains slide past without stopping, the way a person watches the sea for a boat that is never coming back.

One October her grandson Edwin came up from the city with a suitcase and a bad cough. He sat on the bench under the station clock and would not say why he had come. She asked him nothing. She made him tea in a chipped pot and told him about the meadow behind the platform, where the grass grew higher than a man's head and the stationmaster had long ago given up on the mower.
On the third night he walked out into the grass and lay down on his back. She followed with the lamp and found him staring up at the sky, the stars spilt thick across it like salt. "If I lay here," he said, "would anybody come looking?" "Only the wind," she said. "Then I'll lie here a while and see." She sat down beside him in the wet, and the two of them listened to the rails humming a long way off until the lamp guttered out.
He was gone by morning, the suitcase left neatly on the bench. A letter came at Christmas in a careful, looping hand. He wrote that he had lain in that grass for a whole night and forgotten everything he owed anyone, and that when he got up the sky had been the colour of milk. He had caught the first train home. Mrs Teague pinned the letter above the kettle, and she still keeps the level crossing gate open for him.
