Cursive quote tattoo on the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a fine black cursive script running diagonally across the side of a torso, above the ribs and near the waistband. The linework is thin and even, with the handwritten lettering filling most of the upper ribcage. The image has a warm, soft-focus tone with a blurred green background, and the tattoo is the clear focal point against bare skin, denim shorts and dark underwear.

The rain has found the gap in the awning again, and it drips onto the trestle table in a steady tick that you have stopped noticing. Stall nineteen at Carlisle Street Market sells mostly paper: ledgers, postcards, a box of fountain nibs nobody under sixty has asked for. Your uncle left it to you along with a biscuit tin of unsorted letters and a habit of talking to customers about the weather.

A man in a wax jacket picks up a hand-cranked pencil sharpener, turns it over, and asks whether the cursive on the lid is original. You tell him the truth, which is that you don't know, and that the handwriting belongs to someone who had decided to be pleased with their life on the day they wrote it. He laughs, buys it for two pounds, and leaves a coin on the table as if paying a toll.

Afterwards, in the tin, you find a card in that same looping hand. It is short. The past can hurt, it says, and the rest is smudged by a thumb that has been holding it for years. Below, in a newer, shakier pen, someone has added a single line: I ran for thirty years. Then I came back to read it.

You close the tin and put the kettle on the camping stove. Rain keeps falling on the awning. You decide to keep the card in your apron pocket, where you can feel its edge every time you reach for change.
