Crown, eye and rose flash design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A flat illustration of an orange crown with a blue diamond at its centre, sitting above a stylised eye with blue, green and cream rays. Below, a red and orange rose is layered over a fan of teal leaves. Bold dark outlines and hatched line detail define the forms, and the design is shown in a limited palette on a plain cream background.

Dear Joe, the frost came off the north lawn at six, just as you said it would, and I had the shears out before the mist lifted from the yew hedges. The rose on the south wall has finally opened. Hallam's rose, the one he swore would never flower in this clay. Three petals first, then a fourth, crimson at the edge and gone to apricot at the heart, like a fire that has been asked to behave.

You'll remember the copper crown on the cupola above the glasshouse, green as a pond now, and the round window beneath it the village calls the eye. Hallam had the glazier set a blue cut pane in the middle, so that when the sun clears the wall it throws one cold little diamond across the potting bench. I used to think that was vanity. This morning it caught the first light and lay right across the rose, as if someone had pinned it there for a photograph.
The solicitor came on Tuesday. Hallam has left the garden to whoever keeps it, not to the nephew from London, and the solicitor looked at me over his spectacles as though I'd stolen the spoons. So I'm keeping it. I've chalked the rules on the back of the shed door: water the rose only after the eye opens, never cut the leaves before they've turned, and never tell the nephew anything.
Come up on the Saturday train. Bring your proper secateurs, not the cheap ones from the market. I'll have the kettle on and the cuttings wrapped in damp newspaper. Stand with me under the crown at sunrise and tell me the rose is not the most foolish thing either of us has ever loved. Your loving sister, Win.
