Dear Nell, The Harvest Fair came into the field behind the chapel on Tuesday with eleven wagons and one very cross goat, and Mr Oduya has had me up a ladder since dawn painting his palmistry booth. He wants a hand on the front board, a proper one, fingers spread as if it's waving the crowd in. I told him the ladder was hazard enough without me working in this wind.

He calls it a hamsa. His mother's design, he says, though she never travelled further than Leeds. I did the five fingers first, then three small stars up the middle finger and the crescent moons where he pointed, no bigger than thumbnails. The eye went in last, in the centre of the palm. He stood under it for a long while and said it was there to look back at anyone looking at the booth. I laughed, but I'll admit I felt it on my neck while I did the scrollwork.
Last night a gang of lads from the rides went round throwing stones at the wagons. Windows went, a tent pole snapped, and the goat got out. The only thing left unmarked was that board, and Mr Oduya didn't thank anyone for it. He just left a tin of black gloss on my bunk and said the sunburst at the base needed touching up before Saturday's crowd.
So I've done it. The rays are sharper than any sun has ever been over this field. Write back and tell me the sea is still grey, and that Mum has stopped asking when I'm coming home. Love, Pell.
