Open lighter and roses flash design

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing of an open lighter with a small flame rising from the wick, set in front of a cluster of three roses with leaves. A ring of radiating rays sits behind the lighter and roses, and the lighter's lid and body are shaded with simple hatched lines. The design is in black ink on white with no colour, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

Dear Nell, I'm writing this on the back of the seating plan because the good paper has gone to the printers with everything else. Mum has put the roses in a jam jar on the hall table and says they'll be dropping petals by Saturday, but Gordon at the shop on Harrow Road swore they'd last. The lighter is in my coat pocket. You know the one, Grandad's, with the dotted panel where the sticker came off.

The trouble is the candles. The venue wants them lit by hand at the top of the speeches, and Dev has said he'll do it, but he's been practising with the wrong fuel and nearly took his eyebrows off over the trestle table. So I've decided I'll do it myself. I lit the first one in the kitchen tonight to see if the wick still took, and the flame came up tall and straight, exactly as Grandad used to say it should, with no fuss and no second go. I stood there longer than I needed to.

Then I found the note tucked under the lid's hinge. His handwriting, very small, in the pencil he kept behind his ear: 'Light it once you're ready, not before.' I've no idea when he put it there. Possibly 1987. Possibly last Easter, when he came round to fix the boiler and wouldn't let me pay him.

So I'm going to bed now, and tomorrow I'll walk down the aisle with a lighter in my bag and a note I didn't know I had. Come early. Bring the good scissors, and if Dev asks, tell him the candles are my job.
