Crown tattoo on a man's back at the beach
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A man with a black cap and bandana stands with his back to the camera, showing a large crown tattoo with shaded black and grey linework, lettering across the upper back and a biohazard-style symbol nearby. A woman with long blonde hair stands beside him, her back also to the camera, with a small tattoo on her lower back. The couple stand on a sandy beach with the sea in the background, and the image is framed with a white border.

The crate came up from the dock at ten past two, with a biohazard sticker on one side and a salvage firm's label on the other. Dorrie Hale signed for it because nobody else on nights would touch the clipboard. Inside, wrapped in three layers of bubble wrap and a tea towel, was a crown no bigger than a saucepan lid, its points furred with green.

Osei, the pathology technician, wanted it logged and locked in the cold room before anyone opened the bag. Dorrie carried it down the corridor past the lift that always stuck between floors. On the stairs she noticed a ledger tucked under the bubble wrap, its spine cracked, a ward number pencilled on the cover: Ward Four, 1923. The salvage note said the chest had been found in a flooded sluice beneath the old infirmary.
Osei opened the ledger under the strip light and read the entries aloud in a flat voice. Names, doses, a column of tally marks that stopped halfway down a page. Each entry ended with the same two words, held shut by a faded ink stamp: crown kept. Dorrie felt the cold of the room creep up her sleeves and thought of the ward upstairs, where Ward Four still had its old brass bed numbers on the doors.
At three the lift jolted and settled. Osei went off to find a kettle, and Dorrie took the pen from his pocket and wrote her own initials under the last tally. Then, because the form demanded it, she wrote the time, and under disposition, in capitals: RETURNED TO WARD FOUR. NO FURTHER ACTION.
