Crowned archer woman on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large tattoo on the outer thigh shows a woman wearing a crown and a dark bodice, holding a bow in front of a flowing long red skirt. Pale birds fade across the lower left and lower right of the design. Shading is smooth and detailed in red, pink and black, with the face and hair rendered in fine tonal gradients.

The count was Ottilie's job, and at the Varno crossing that meant tallying birds before anything else. Racing pigeons in wicker baskets, doves for weddings, a parrot that swore in two languages and was fined for both. She kept the ledger on a board beside the barrier, and the rain got into the ink every morning.

The traveller came down the ridge path a little after dawn with a mule, a bundle of oilcloth, and a bow with no string. Ottilie asked the usual question. The answer was that there was nothing to declare except a promise made to a man in the valley, that the doves would be let go at the line, as his grandfather had once let them go for a treaty nobody in the village remembered signing.
Ottilie had no form for that. She stamped the ledger, lifted the barrier, and watched the oilcloth fall open on the wet stones. Inside was a cage of pale birds, quiet as ash, and when the door swung they rose out of the mist on the far slope and came down in a slow spiral over the post, their wings the colour of old paper.
One of them settled on the ledger, on the line where her tally should have gone. Ottilie left it there. For once the count came out to nothing, and she signed it that way.
