Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo of a pink gown with a jewelled bodice ornament, tied blue ribbons and a full skirt, with two blue birds perched at the top corners. Bold dark outlines and solid fills of pink, blue and grey are used, with some highlights on the fabric, and the design is set against plain skin.

The mouse got to the gown before I did. Every night of the wet season it crept out from under the cistern to nibble the linen I folded for the mistress, and every night I chased it with a sandal. So when the pink silk arrived from Miletus, wrapped in a merchant's sack and smelling of cedar, I hid it at the bottom of my chest and told myself that mice cannot read.

The festival at Memphis was for the river goddess, and every girl in Naukratis with two good feet and a bit of nerve meant to walk the quay in finery. I had no right to finery, but I had the gown and a pair of blue glazed slippers the potter's boy had traded me for three days of sweeping. They fitted as if the kiln had been waiting for my heel. At dusk, when I stepped out of the gate, the two swallows that nested in the sycamore rose together and flew ahead of me, ribbons of light trailing from their wings.
On the stairs down to the water, the left slipper slipped off and went over the edge. I had just bent to fetch it when a bird came down out of the sky, snatched it from the step, and flew away with it, north towards the palace. The second slipper stayed where it was, so I took it off too and walked the rest of the quay barefoot, holding the silk clear of the wet stones.
The steward came to the sycamore the next morning, asking for the foot that fitted. By then the gown was back in my chest and I was sweeping the courtyard. I told him I was nobody, which was true, and that the slipper belonged to the mouse, which was not. He laughed until he had to sit on the cistern wall, and the mouse, which had been listening all along, ran off with a scrap of pink silk in its teeth.
