A realistic portrait of a woman in profile, with closed eyes, a fringe and long hair, shown in soft grey tones. Sit down where the gulls can't reach you, and mind that coil of rope, it bites. Forty-one boats went out of Skerrow the week the big wind came, and the clock over the fish market had already stopped at ten to four, because Tobias Rennick forgot to wind it on the Sunday.

His daughter Nell kept the tide-book then. She was the only one who could read the chalk lines on the slate, and she would not look at that clock. Her mother had said it was bad luck to watch a clock that wasn't going, so Nell kept her eyes shut whenever she passed it, and walked the harbour wall by feel, counting her steps to the lamp post.

On the third night a boat knocked against the wall, the Mary Cant, with nobody aboard her but a lantern still burning in the wheelhouse. Nell went down the slippery steps with her eyes closed, the way she always did, and she heard the hands of that clock move at last, one small click, as if someone had finally got round to winding it.

They say the men came in on the next tide, every one of them, soaked to the bone and cursing for their supper. Nell never opened her eyes on the quay that morning, not once. So when you ask me why the Skerrow fleet still gets home, I tell you to keep your eyes on the tide and not on the clock, and then I ask you to fetch my tea.
