Crowned lion on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A lion's head wearing a crown is tattooed centrally on the upper back, with the figure's mane rendered in detailed shading. The work uses soft grey tones and fine gradations to give the face and mane depth, with the crown picked out in darker lines. The photograph shows the back with a ponytail and a yellow and black bikini top against a pale blue sky.

Mrs Pryor swears it was gold. I think it was tarnished iron, the colour of rain on the slates.

I went down with the lamp last night, meaning to see for myself, and found him lying in the bracken at the edge of the trees with his mane spread out like a fallen sheaf. He did not rise. He only turned his great grey face towards me and looked, the way old Mr Brackens used to look at a debt he meant to collect in full. I have kept the parish accounts for thirty years and I know that look. I said good evening. He closed his eyes.
This morning there was a crown-shaped dent in the moss beside the path and a single bright hair caught on the gate, too fine for any horse. Nobody in the village will go up past the stile now, though the bailiff has nailed a notice to the oak saying trespassers will be prosecuted. I have decided to leave a dish of milk by the gate. Whatever he is, I would rather he thought me polite.
Write back soon, and tell me whether the crown in your London shop window is real or only paste. Yours in haste, Edwin.
