Crowned lion head on the upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded lion head wearing a crown sits centred between the shoulder blades, with the mane rendered in layered dark lines and soft grey tones. The lion's eyes and muzzle are detailed, and the outline is clean against the skin. The photograph is taken from behind on white sheets, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The crown had gone green at the hinges, and Tilly Vance spent the cold morning rubbing it with vinegar on the tailboard of the lorry while the lion watched her through the bars. Marlowe had never liked anyone who wasn't her father, but he liked the sharp smell of the vinegar, and he pushed his great head against the mesh until the wire rang.

Her father had won the crown from a Dutch promoter in 1958, or so he told anyone who bought him a drink at the Carlisle fair. The Hartley Brothers Travelling Circus had once run eleven wagons. Now it ran three, two tents with patches sewn into their roofs, and a ring the council wanted to sell for flats. Marlowe was the last of the big cats, and everyone knew he would be the last thing Tilly could afford to keep.

On the final night in Carlisle the tent was half full and the band played without a trumpet. Tilly walked Marlowe out through the back flap instead of the ring, past the caravans with their curtains drawn, and across the wet field to the hedge. The lion stopped at the gate as if he had been told the rules. She lifted the crown from his head, where it had sat on its wire band for twelve years, and hooked it over the top bar.

Her father would have had something to say about that. Instead she let Marlowe roar once across the empty field, a sound that carried to the ridge and back, and when she turned round the gate was bare. In April a farm boy from the next valley found the crown in the hedge, bent and rust-coloured, and carried it home on his bicycle like treasure. Tilly never asked for it back.
