Fine line wave tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind on a beach, with blonde hair falling over one shoulder and one arm raised. A small, thin black wave outline sits on her upper back near the shoulder, drawn with simple, single-weight linework and no shading. The background shows dark rocks and the sea, and the palette is warm skin tones against cool, muted greys.

The men come up from the adit at six with the sea still sloshing in their boots, and you are already at the gate with the kettle hot, because your mother said the water would be early again this winter. Tin lies under the headland, but so does the Atlantic, and everyone in Porthmenna knows which of them is winning. The engine house on the cliff has stopped its beam twice this month.

Jory went under the headland on Tuesday to fetch pump rods and has not come up. The captain sends word that the level is flooded to the third ladder. At low water you walk down to the strand with a slate under your arm and a stub of chalk in your pocket, and you sit on the wet shingle drawing what Jory taught you to read: the long swell rolling in from past the Scillies, lifting, curling, and falling flat on the sand.
You draw it the way he drew for you when you were small, one unbroken line with no shading, just the lift of the crest and the hollow behind it. The sea has never once cared about lines. Behind you the engine house stands black against the cloud, and the light breaks open over the rocks like a door.
When the tide turns a boy comes running down the cliff path shouting. Jory is on the pump house steps, soaked to the skin and furious, holding a rod like a spear. You do not get up. You hold the slate up to him, the wave already half washed by spray, and he laughs the way he always does when he has been caught out. He takes the chalk from your fingers and traces the curl again on the inside of his own wrist, slow and careful, as if the sea might need reminding where to stop.
