CSS quote lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with the words Fear { display: none; } tattooed in black, serif typewriter-style lettering, with the text running horizontally across the arm. The linework is crisp and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The arm fills the frame against a dark top, with the person's face and head cropped out of view.

The barge is called Patience and it has never once been patient. You have been living aboard for six weeks, long enough to know which plank on the back deck sings when you step on it, and which lock keeper will wave you through if you bring him a jar of marmalade. The fear arrives every evening around the time the lamps come on along the towpath. It sits with you in the galley while the kettle thinks about boiling, and it makes the screen in front of you too loud.

So you do what your father taught you on the old laptop he left in the bow locker. You open the stylesheet. You find the selector that matches the worst thing, the one that keeps you awake, and you write the rule the way he wrote them, with the braces and the semicolon you always forget. Fear, display: none. The signal out here is poor and the page takes its time, but when it reloads the thing is simply gone from the layout. Nothing collapses. The text around it shifts up a line and the margins hold.
Then a hire cruiser throws a wash against the hull and the word comes back, because you forgot to raise the specificity. Your father would have laughed at that. He used to say a rule only holds if you are willing to be wrong about it in the right places.
You sit with the cursor blinking in the dark and type the rule again, longer this time, with a comment above it that says only: still here. You save the file. Outside, a heron lifts off the water without a sound, and for once you watch it all the way out of sight without looking back at the screen.
