Dear Maud, the new man on the Ghost Train is called Cyril Vance, though everyone calls him Vance, and in six weeks he has not once jumped at anything. Mr Pellow put him on the switches because nobody else would sit in the dark car with the skeleton that drops on its wire. Vance just sits there and hums. He showed the lad the wire without any fuss at all.

On the third night he told me the trick. Before he pulls the lever he says the same few lines under his breath, the way other men say grace. Fear is the mind-killer, he said, and when I asked where he'd got that, he said a woman with a sharp voice had made him learn it as a boy, and that he'd never once found it wrong. I'd heard it on the wireless once, a Sunday play, but he said it like a rule he'd been taught by someone strict.
Maybe it is only a saying. Mr Pellow reckons it is nonsense and says a fairground runs on screaming. But the Ghost Train takes more on a Saturday than it ever did, and nobody has asked for their money back.
Yesterday the wagon stopped short in the tunnel and the lights failed. I heard Vance say the words once, quite calmly, and then the bulb flickered on. He had the lever in his hand and was already grinning at me through the gloom. Write soon, and tell Dad the big wheel is being painted pink again. Love, Rosie
