Typewriter quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a quotation set in a typewriter-style serif font, arranged across five lines that run diagonally along the inner forearm. The letterforms are crisp and solid black with clean edges, and the image is entirely greyscale. The soft vignette and dark sleeve at the top left frame the text against a plain background.

The typewriter came in on a Tuesday wrapped in a bath towel, which told me more about its owner than she meant to. I cleaned the type bars with a toothbrush and a drop of paraffin while she sat on the stool by my bench and watched the back of my hands.

There was one sheet still rolled behind the platen, the last thing he had typed. When I lifted it out to test the carriage, I read it before I could stop myself: And in that moment, I swear we were infinite. Beneath it, in soft pencil, he had written Bournemouth, the pier, 1971, then crossed the line through so hard the paper had torn.
I told her the e would need a new hammer and a week of patience. She said there was no hurry, and she meant it the way people mean things about objects they have stopped expecting to finish. I did the work at the back bench with the radio off. When the e began to strike clean, I typed the line myself on a scrap of card, once, slowly, to be sure the spacing held.
On Thursday she came for it. She pressed the card to her coat and asked whether I minded if she typed one more line underneath. I said the machine was hers. She rolled in a fresh sheet, and the keys went down one at a time like someone counting coins in a dark room, and I went back to my bench so she could have the shop to herself.
