A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dennis Mould had been on Ward Nine for nineteen days and had not once been civil before four in the morning. At ten past three I found him propped against his pillows, glaring at the paper case on his tray table as though it had insulted his mother. Inside was a cupcake from the shop on the ground floor, purple swirl of frosting, a glacé cherry squashed flat on top.

"Who sent you that?" I asked, because the visitors' book said his daughter had gone home at eight.

"Kath did. Sends one up every night with the porters." He pulled the paper off with his thumbs, slowly, the way you'd undress a child. "She's on Four with her hip. Says it's the only thing in this place with any manners."

He ate it in small bites while the monitor ticked beside him. He told me Kath had once thrown a teapot at a surveyor who called their semi a bungalow, and that she had never in forty-one years said a kind word before lunch. "Sweet on the inside," he said, licking frosting from his thumb. "That's the arrangement. Nobody warns you." He held out the last half and I took it, because refusing would have ended the conversation and he had earned a bit of ending.

At six I walked down to Four with a jug of water I did not need to deliver. The porter on the desk was reading the Sun and didn't look up. Taped to the trolley beside him was a folded square of card, written in biro: Tell him the cherry was mine.
