Teal moth with pink heart and beaded chains
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A moth with teal wings edged in black outlines, decorated with pink, yellow and purple markings and small dots. A pink heart sits at the centre of the body, with feathery yellow-green antennae above and a fringe of teal beaded chains ending in yellow teardrop pendants below. The bold outlines and flat, saturated colour are set against pinkish skin in a close, slightly angled crop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Nell had the lamp off the hook before the moth found it, so the bulb was still warm when she held it out over the seed trays. The moth ignored her. It walked along the rim of the tin shade on feathered legs, opening and closing its wings as if it were counting something, and the dew on the beaded chains of its fringe caught the light from the window and let it fall in small yellow drops onto the potting bench.

Nobody had told her moths came in that colour. Her gran's garden had been all browns and greys, a rotting bench of dahlia tubers and a shed that smelled of creosote and paraffin. Gran had said the night moths were the ones that did the real pollinating, that the day bees got the glory. Nell had not believed her until now, watching the thing sit on the lamp with its wings banded in teal and rose, the pale pink heart on its body rising and falling with its breath.
She thought of Gran's jar of bean seeds, the labels in her looping pencil, and the box marked Keep Warm that had never once been opened in her lifetime. Nell had been meaning to sort it for a year. The moth lifted off and went straight for the open window, where the old runner beans were climbing the frame in the dark.
She shut the window behind it, then opened it again. Some things in a garden were not hers to keep. By morning the dew on the lawn would have taken the yellow drops off the bench, and whatever the moth had come to do would be done.
