The hoarding round Coldharbour House had been up since March, and by the time Maureen Dyer climbed the ladder on Thursday the wind off the car park was pulling at her overall like a dog with a sock. She didn't type it. She copied it from the back of a postcard her brother Terry had sent from Skegness in 1974, the summer he went south with a van and a girl from the Co-op and never sent for his things. The postcard had lived in her purse for fifty years, soft as cloth at the corners. Her hand knew the slope of his capitals better than her own. Maureen dipped her quill in the black, considered the question with the seriousness it deserved, and said it meant somebody had finally written the thing down.

She finished the final swash on the word them as the first crane arm swung into view above the roof. Then she packed her brushes in their tin, climbed down, and caught the 42 home with gold size still drying on her cuffs.
