Cursive quotation tattoo on the thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A three-line quotation is written in black cursive script across the upper thigh, with the lines centred and slightly staggered. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The close crop shows the thigh, denim shorts and a hand at the top of the frame, with the tattoo sitting clearly in the centre-left of the image.

The ink in the bottle had gone thick with cold by the time I came down to the back room of the stationer's on Briggate, so I warmed it between my palms like a boy with a bird's egg. Thirty-eight years I had written other people's words in a fair round hand: invoices, wills, the odd love letter for men who could not spell. Nobody asked what the words meant. That was the trade.

The order came on a Tuesday, pinned inside a card envelope. Three lines of verse for a memorial plate, to be cut in brass by Friday. The writing on the card was a woman's, quick and sloped, and she had struck out one word and written another above it. I copied the lines slowly, the nib barely lifting, and when I held the sheet to the window I saw my own small fault. The third line sat a hair left of the others, as if it had flinched.
I took the sheet back to Mrs Ackroyd at the door of the Hunslet terrace. She read it on the step without taking off her gloves. "Not mine," she said. "His. He never wrote a line in his life that didn't lean." She went inside and came back with a biscuit tin full of receipts, and under them a pocket book with the same lines in pencil, the same slight stagger, and the same word crossed out.
I made the plate the way she asked, copying his hand and not mine, and I left the crossed-out word in the middle of the third line where he had left it. It was the only thing on the brass that was not already decided.
