Cursive script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm raised towards the top of the frame, with the person's head and face outside the picture. A thin, cursive script in black ink runs down the forearm with delicate, even linework. The background is a plain grey wall, and a dark vest top is visible at the shoulder.

No, sit down, you will want both hands for this, because the paper is damp and the ink runs if you hurry it. Look at the hand. That is my husband Tomas, who could never keep a line straight in his life, yet wrote everything as if he were chasing a train. Sixty-one years he sent me notes across this river. He pinned them under the third step of the ferry landing, where the stone is loose, so the men on both banks never got to read them first.

The guards on the far side used to laugh at us. They said a man who wrote that badly had no business with a pen, and a woman who read that badly had no business with a husband. I told them the letters were not for reading in the ordinary way. You had to follow the loops with your eye the way you follow a boat downstream, and then the meaning arrived on its own. The leap at the end of each capital was where he kept his jokes.
When the river rose the winter the bridge washed out, the crossing shut for eleven weeks. He wrote every day regardless. The last note came on a Tuesday, and it was only three words long, the ink smudged where his thumb had rested. Seize the day, it said, and then, below, the water is going down. I laughed until the guard came out to see what the matter was.
So here is my pass, and here is the note, and you may keep the note if you promise to read it properly. Mind the wet ink on your fingers. It will come off on your sleeve, and then you will carry a little of his handwriting across with you, whether you wanted it or not.
