Joy script tattoo on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the single word "joy" written in thin, flowing script in black ink on the inner wrist. The linework is fine and even, with a slight slant and looping connections between letters. The image is black and white, with the hand raised near the neck and shoulder softly out of focus in the background.

Dear Nell, The oven was stone cold when I let myself in at four, so I lit it myself and stood there with my palms out, the way Dad used to, waiting for the warmth to tell me it was ready. Mrs Okafor's boy was already at the back door with his nose pressed to the glass, which tells you what the street is like now that the chip shop has shut.

I found your old pencil case in the drawer under the proving tins, the one with the broken zip. Inside was Dad's flour-dusted index card, the one with the recipe for the milk loaf written in that lean, rushed hand of his. The letters lean forward as if they're late for something, and every word ends in a little hook like he couldn't bear to lift the pen off the card. I sat on the upturned crate and read it twice before the first batch went in.
The loaves came out gold at half five. A girl I'd never seen before, maybe nine, asked me what the word on the chalkboard meant. I had written it that morning without thinking, in the same slanted hand, just joy, and it had sat there all day above the till. I told her it was the thing you feel when the bread rises higher than you expected. She thought about that, then bought the smallest cob we had and skipped off into the grey.
I'm keeping the chalk. Come home at Easter and tell me what it means in Aberdeen, and bring the card back so I can copy the hook on the end of the loaf.
Love, Ada
