Dagger and skull on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A dagger runs vertically through a human skull, which sits in front of a shield-shaped banner with curled edges. The skull and dagger are rendered in black and grey, with the skull's bone shading built from fine stippled dots and the dagger's grip and blade in solid black linework. The design fills the centre of the frame against a dark background, with the tattoo sitting on a pale calf.

Sit closer, the stove is the only warm thing for forty miles, and you'll want to hear this before the lorries come up from the lower road. They called it the Crooked Gate because the posts were set wrong by a drunk mason, and for three hundred years the men who kept it swore their oaths over the same skull.

Nobody living knows whose skull it was. Some say a smuggler who sold short measures of salt, some say a sergeant who waved his own brother through without looking. The dagger went in through the crown the night they buried him, and the shield went up over the lintel so its curled edges would keep the rain off the bone. Every new keeper put a hand to the hilt before he took his oath, and that was all the ceremony there ever was.

Then in the wet spring of my grandmother's time, a woman came up the track with a cart of bees and no papers. The keeper, a boy called Eudo Harrow, had to decide whether a blade that had never cut anything honest could still be trusted to cut a lie. He lifted the dagger out, brushed the grey dust from the eye sockets, and said, go on then, the bees have been waiting since dawn.

He never put the blade back in its old place. The gate stayed open that spring, the skull got a new hook, and the grip, they say, is still warm in the mornings from all the hands that touch it for luck. Mind the step now. Papers, love?
