Dagger with banner on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A dagger with a tall ornate hilt runs diagonally down the leg, with its blade pointing towards the bottom of the frame. A curled orange ribbon banner wraps around the blade and carries short capital lettering. The dagger is shaded in greys with highlights, and only the banner carries colour against the skin.

You learned to read the river by its knives before you learned its names. The Vesper Gull lay low in the fog at Bawtry Lock, her hull riding heavy with coal, and Dad kept the tally dagger in its sheath by the tiller. The hilt was black horn bound with brass, and the blade had worn thin as a reed from years of sharpening on the step.

The trouble started when the lock-keeper's boy went missing with a length of orange silk he'd won off a fairground wagon. Nobody believed the river had him, but the search party turned back at dusk. You went along the towpath with the dagger in your belt, because Dad said a blade in the belt tells the water you mean business, and the water mostly believes it.
You found him under the lock gates, tangled in the weed, the silk wound round his wrist like a bandage. You cut the ribbon free with the tally knife, and the blade sang once against the rope. He wouldn't let go of it. When he finally spoke, he read you the letters stitched along its edge in his mother's thread, and you understood the silk had never been meant to pull him under. It was meant to bring him home.
Back on the Gull, Dad notched the hilt with one more mark and said nothing, which was how you knew it had been a good night. The river took the rest of the coal to London, and the dagger went back in its sheath, still sharp.
