Dagger and blue rose on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A dagger with a banded grip and cross guard runs vertically through a blue rose, with green leaves and a sprig of leaves to the right. Bold black outlines define the blade, rose petals and foliage, with simple shading on the blade and petals. Blue, yellow, orange and green are set against the skin, with a blurred background of a yellow road marking and a wheel.

Nobody on the night shift at St Ebba's believed the porter when he said the rose was growing through the lino outside Bay Four. He said it the way he said everything, flat as a dropped tray, so the nurses only laughed and asked him to mop it up. Dan Corrigan knelt there anyway at three in the morning with his torch and saw a blue bloom no bigger than a thumbnail pushing up between two tiles, its leaves dark as ink and edged in gold from the lamp above.

His gran had told him of it when he was small, in the kitchen at Thorne where the wind came off the marsh. A blue rose, she said, would not open for kindness or money. It opened only where something sharp had been put down by someone who meant to keep it. You had to leave the blade in place and let the flower grow up round the steel, the way hawthorn swallows an old fence post.

Dan had a dagger of his own at the bottom of his locker, his father's, the grip bound in black cord and the cross guard worn bright by thumbs. He had meant to sell it at the car boot on Sunday. Instead he fetched it and pressed the point down beside the bloom, and the corridor went quiet the way it does before a call bell goes. Somewhere a trolley wheel squeaked, and the petals opened a finger's width.

Nobody saw it but him. By morning the rose had gone back under the tiles, leaving a neat blue scar in the grout and his father's knife standing in it, upright as a lamp. Sister Harrow asked what he thought he was doing with a blade on a hospital floor. He said he was keeping something from getting out. She didn't ask again, and he didn't take the knife home.
