Feathered headdress woman on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A woman's profile wears a tall feathered headdress with a red and gold band, and an animal head with open jaws and bared teeth sits below her. The linework is bold and black, with solid black areas for the hair and feathers and grey shading on the headdress. Red and yellow accents appear on the band, the jewel and the animal's mouth, set against the pale skin of the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

I had carried the crown up the hill for three winters before the Queen let me see her face while she wore it. Seven feathers stood on the band, each notched and red at the tip, and she told me every notch was a promise someone had broken in her hearing. The iron-jawed hound that lay at her feet was called Tarrow, and he never growled. He only opened his mouth, slowly, the way a gate swings, and the courtiers went quiet and began to remember things they had done.

The trouble began with the salt boats. Lord Edric swore the harbour toll had been paid, and the clerks swore it had not, and for a month the kingdom of Marrowdeane split down the middle like a loaf. I was sent to fetch the ledgers from the eastern tower. I found them in a chest beneath a painted heron, and on the last page, in the Queen's own neat hand, were the names of the men she had paid to lie.

I carried the book back up the hill under my coat. The Queen was waiting by the fire, the gold of her band catching the light so it looked like a wound. She did not ask what I had found. She only lifted her chin toward Tarrow, and the hound opened his jaws wide, and I understood that the wolf had never been the dangerous thing in her court.

She pulled the seven feathers from the band one by one and laid them across the ledger. Then she smiled at me, and it was the first kind thing she had ever done.
