Dagger with blood drops flash design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows two separate dagger designs: one with a ribbed handle and ornate crossguard, and a blade below it with a small drip detail at the tip. Both are drawn in bold outlines with grey shading that suggests the metal and handle form. The image is in black and grey on a plain white background, with the elements placed diagonally across the frame.

The big top has lost two of its poles since spring, and the canvas sags over the ring like a wet sail. You stand at the board with the old dagger warm in your palm, its ribbed grip worn smooth where Tomasz's thumb used to sit. Tonight the crossguard has cracked again, and Mrs Harrow wants the act finished before the council men arrive with their clipboards and their questions about the insurance.

Rosalind is already pinned to the board, arms spread, her wig fixed flat with a row of hairgrips. The drummer rolls once. You throw. The blade leaves your hand clean, turns once in the lamplight and sinks into the wood a finger's width from her ear. Forty people gasp as though it were a hundred. When you pull the blade free, the tip snaps off in your fingers and drops into the sawdust, where it lies point down like a splinter of glass, a bead of red paint still wet on its edge.
Rosalind laughs, shakes the sawdust from her hair and says the handle is the only part worth keeping. She is right, and you both know it. Mrs Harrow sells the rig the following Monday to a scrap man from Hull who pays by the pound. You keep the tip in your coat pocket, where it knocks against your hip on the long road north.
On the last night of the tour you take it out at a petrol station outside Doncaster and turn it over under the sodium light. It is smaller than you remembered. You put it back in your pocket and leave the rest of the act behind you in the car park.
