Vertical geometric stack design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A vertical stack of geometric motifs runs down the centre of a plain white background, including a layered triangle cluster at the top, a small rune-like cross, stacked downward triangles, a circle, chevrons and diamonds, ending in a pointed shape. The linework is fine and black, with stippled grey dotwork shading on the triangles and the lower diamond. The design is in black and grey only and is shown as a standalone drawing with no body part visible.

You reach the tower stair at dusk, when the wind has already found the broken window on the north wall and the masons' marks are the only things left talking. Halfway up, someone has cut a sign into the stone: three triangles stacked like tents pitched one above another, then a cross with its arms bent, then a small circle. Old Harrow at the gatehouse said the sequence meant the stair was sound. You are no longer sure Harrow ever climbed it.

The plumb line hangs from the top landing, a cord of tarred hemp with a lead weight shaped like a drop of rain. You were sent to bring it down before the cord rots and the bell goes with it. Chevrons march down the wall beside you, each one pointing the way you have just come, like the marks a hunter leaves on a trail. Near the bottom the carvings grow sharper and the diamonds look newer, as if a hand in a hurry had finished the work after the others had gone home.
At the foot of the stair there is no bell, only a dry well under the flagstones and a lid with a cross cut into it. You lift the lid. Inside lies a second weight, duller than the first, and a scrap of paper folded small. The mason's hand says: measure from the top and the tower stands; measure from the bottom and it is you who falls. You read it twice, then climb back up with the cord coiled over your shoulder.
At the top you let the lead drop. It swings once, twice, and comes to rest exactly over the lid of the well, pointing at the one place in the castle that has never moved.
