Daisy and bud on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A daisy-like flower with a shaded centre sits on a stem with a closed bud and two veined leaves, all drawn in black ink. The linework is fine and the petals and leaves are lightly shaded, with stippled texture in the centre of the bloom. Part of another grey tattoo is visible above it, and the subject wears a dark skirt with a woven belt against a pale background.

Dear Imre, the ring logged its forty-first frost cycle this morning, and I went down to Bay Nine braced for the usual grey stubble in the lettuce trays. Instead I found the daisy you sent up from the Hollow beds had finally opened. Two stems, really, one bloom fully out with its white rays lifted and its centre stippled dark as a thumbprint, and beside it a bud still shut tight as a knuckle, as if it had not yet decided whether the air was worth the trouble.

Councillor Vos came down with the inspection roster at noon and wanted the bed cleared. Unlisted cultivar, she said, and the cargo manifest has no room for leaves like that. Those leaves are ridged with veins as fine as the hairlines on your grandmother's maps, and I told her so, which did no good at all. She counted the trays twice and signed off on the lettuce instead. I have not told her that I kept a cutting.
I pressed it between two blank sheets of the seed ledger tonight, the stem bent just so and both leaves laid flat. As it dried, the ink of the stem left a faint shadow on the paper, the way pencil does when you rub a thumb across it. I have left the bud on the plant where it is. Come home at the next thaw and tell me what it does. Yours, Hanne.
