Lotus flower on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single lotus flower with outlined petals sits on the forearm, with a small curled ornament below the bloom and a thin vertical stem that ends in a dot. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the tattoo uses black ink only. The design is angled diagonally down the arm against a patterned wallpaper background.

Dear Ruth,

You will think I have gone soft, writing to you by hand when the telephone in the potting shed works perfectly well, but the pond has finally given us a bloom and I wanted you to see it the way I did, which is to say slowly. It opened on Tuesday before the frost had lifted off the lily tank. Six petals first, then the rest unfolding like the pleats in Mother's good linen, each edge drawn so fine you could mistake it for pencil.

Mr Abernethy from the estates office came down with his clipboard and asked whether we would be selling the bloom or pressing it. I told him neither. The seed head is the part nobody bothers about. It sits in the middle of the flower like a little green colander, with one seed in each cup. Mother used to say a seed could wait two hundred years in mud and still wake when the water warmed. I thought she was exaggerating until I read it in a journal from Kew, which is not something I ever expected to be able to say.

So I have done what she would have done. I eased a seed loose with tweezers, scored it gently with a needle, and dropped it in a jam jar on the windowsill beside the kettle. Below it, on the sill, I have left a single pin standing upright in a saucer of water, because I wanted something to mark the spot where the stem would have gone. Nothing has happened yet. Give it a month.

Come up at Easter if you can. Bring the good tweezers.

Love, Aunt Win
