Poppy with stem on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single poppy flower with a bloom facing outward, a thin curving stem with small leaves and a few thorn-like marks, drawn in black linework. The petals and centre use light grey shading and fine hatching for depth. The design runs diagonally up the forearm against a plaid sleeve, with the flower sitting near the wrist.

The lane out of Hollin Cross gives up its last cottage at the beech line, and that is where the poppies come up first, in the ruts the carts leave when the ground is soft. Your mother sent you with a twist of twine and a tin of seed and told you plainly: take the pale ones with the grey smudge at the heart, never the red, because the red were for the bees and the pale ones were for the house on the hill, and the house on the hill was owed its share.

The stems are the trouble. Wild rose grows thick along the wood's edge, and the thorns catch your cuff every time you reach past them. The leaves fold shut when you brush them, as if they are sulking. You count the blooms the way she taught you, one for each window in the village that still shows a lamp, and you cut only the one that leans furthest toward the path, its petals already loosening like a napkin folded wrong.
A man in a checked coat is waiting where the beeches thicken. He does not give his name. He holds out his hand for the flower and says it is late this year, and you tell him it is the last on the bank. He studies the grey smudge on the petals for a long time before he nods, and when you turn back you see the cottage lamps have all gone out except one, which is hers.
You reach the gate before dark. The petal has shed a little dust onto the cuff of your coat, a grey mark that will not rub out, and you stop trying to wash it away.
