The band at the Winter Garden has played the same waltz four times since eight o'clock, because the trumpeter lost his place and Mr Haskins won't let anyone stop. I am writing this on the back of a programme with my good pencil, so forgive the smudges. Your dad says the ballroom floor is being sanded on Monday, which means nobody will dance for a week and the whole place will smell of varnish and cigarettes.

I went out onto the terrace at the interval and found a daisy growing in a crack between the flagstones, all alone, its stem bent right over where someone had trodden on it. I picked it because I thought it was done for. Then I noticed it had not given up at all. The head was still open, white around the edge and gold in the middle, as though it had simply decided the terrace was a fine place to be a flower. I put it in a water glass on the bar. Bert the barman said he would throw it out with the lemons, but when I came back at the end of the night it was still standing up straight, and a boy from the Navy had given it a splash of his lemonade for luck.

Come on Saturday. Bring the blue cardigan. I will save you the last dance, and if the trumpeter is still lost by then, we can dance to his mistakes.
