Two sunflowers with orange splashes
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two sunflowers, one above and one below, each with a grey oval centre and layered yellow petals. Black outlines and soft grey shading define the petals and centres, while loose orange and dark streaks radiate from the flowers. Yellow dominates the colour, with the composition set diagonally across the limb on pale skin.

Mrs Pardoe swore the two heads were quarrelling, and by the second week of August nobody on Fenstead Common was going to argue with her. The tall one stood by the allotment gate, taller than the Morrison boy, its face turned to the lane as if it expected the bus. The smaller one leaned in from the water butt, its petals scorched orange at the tips where Bert had splashed the tomato feed.

Every morning they turned their backs on each other and faced the sun, and every evening they turned back again, grumbling in the only language sunflowers have, which is the slow creak of a stalk. Bert measured them against the shed door each Saturday and wrote the figures in the seed book in pencil, because pencil, he said, didn't argue. The tall one won the show ribbon in September. The small one, out of spite, dropped a head of seed the size of a shilling on the path where nobody would trip over it, and Mrs Pardoe took that as a sign.
The gale came on the last night of September. In the morning the tall stalk lay across the water butt, snapped at the knee, and the small one was standing over it with its head bowed low, as though it had been asked to say something and couldn't find the words. Mrs Pardoe didn't cut either of them down. She let them dry where they were, and by Christmas the heads were black and heavy with seed.
In April there were two green shoots by the gate, one crowding the other toward the light. Mrs Pardoe wrote both names into the seed book and underlined the second one twice.
