Sunflower on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large sunflower covers the outer forearm, with its petals running down the arm and the seed head centred near the wrist side. The petals are outlined in fine dark lines and shaded with stippled dots that fade toward the edges, while the centre uses dense dotwork to suggest seeds. The arm is set against a warm wooden slatted background, and the image is in black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sunflowers at the edge of Hollin Wood were planted by a man who could not bear to see the sun go down without something to face it. Every August the village children counted the heads, and every August the count came out wrong by one, because the last head always stood turned toward the trees instead of the west.

Agnes Pell kept the cottage nearest the stile. Her husband had gone into the wood with a lantern the autumn before and come back with only the lantern, its glass blackened, and she did not speak of it except to say he had been looking for the seed of the big head, the one that turned. She went out each dawn with a bowl of barley and scattered it at the root of the tallest stalk, and the stalk bent a little further every morning, the way a man bends to hear a question.

On the last day of harvest a boy from the mill came running with his cap in his hands and said the wood was giving off light. Agnes followed him to the stile. In the clearing the great flower stood alone, its face as wide as a cartwheel and its seeds packed in rings so tight they seemed to hum. Her husband's lantern hung from one of the petals, still lit, and when she reached for it the head swung down and let her take the handle, as if it had been waiting for a hand that knew the weight.

She walked home with the light in her fist. The village still says she kept the seeds, and that every spring sunflowers come up along the stile facing her door, though not one of them has ever once faced the wood.
