Black and grey fine line dandelion tattoo with drifting seeds and the word wish in script on the inner forearm near the wrist.

Dandelion and wish on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a wrist and inner forearm, with a dandelion gone to seed drawn in fine black linework. Loose seeds drift away from the head towards the lower edge of the frame, and the word wish is written in a small script beneath the stem. The soft, out-of-focus background keeps attention on the tattoo.

Brother Osric had told the novice three times that the dandelions in the cloister garth were not weeds but a kind of sundial, and three times the novice had gone back to pulling them up by the roots. So when the letter came from the house at Wenlock asking for seed of the old yellow flower for the infirmary, Osric sent the boy out at dawn with a basket and a stern look.

The boy came back at noon with the basket full of white heads, grey as old men's hair, and sat on the wall with his knees under his chin. "They won't let go," he said. "I blew on one and it just sat there thinking about it."

Osric took the basket and tipped it into the drying tray. Then he told him the old custom: that a seed let go by breath carries one wish, and the wish goes wherever the wind chooses, which is why the brothers never wished for themselves. A wish belonged to the wind. He told it plainly, the way his own abbot had told it to him, as if it were a rule of the kitchen.

The boy asked what he should wish for. Osric said he could not say, it was not his to say. But he watched the boy go out to the wall that evening, stand very straight, and blow once, hard, across the stones. The seeds rose in a loose ragged line and drifted over the orchard wall toward the river, and the boy did not turn to see where they landed, because that, Osric supposed, was the whole point of it.
