Small lotus tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower with five outlined petals sits on the wrist, drawn in a single black line with no shading. The ink is solid black and the composition is centred on the wrist, with the raised hand cropped at the top of the frame. The black and white photograph shows a light patterned bedspread with scrolling floral motifs in the background.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor believed Mrs Sandhu had got a lotus to flower on a balcony in Salford, least of all the lad from the council who came to check the damp. He stood at the rail with his clipboard and told her the wind would have it off the ledge by Easter. She just pointed at the bath.

It was an old tin bath, the kind my nan used to scrub the kids in, sunk to its rim in a bag of compost. She had brought the seed back from her sister's in Leicester wrapped in a damp tea towel, and nobody thought to ask how she'd got it past the train inspectors. Every morning before her shift at the laundry she topped the water up from a plastic jug, and every evening she sat on the step stool with her tea and watched the leaves unroll, flat and green as dinner plates.
The flower came in June, on a Tuesday. Five petals first, pale pink at the tips, then the whole thing opening slowly in the heat rising off the car park, the way a hand opens when it has been holding something too long. Mrs Sandhu rang everyone on the landing. The lad came back with his clipboard and stood there a while without writing anything.
When she died in the winter the bath went out with the bin men, compost and all. I still have the tea towel. It smells faintly of mud, and of the one thing on that balcony that did exactly what it was supposed to.
