Dandelion-like tattoo with stem on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the upper arm and shoulder shows a radiating, dandelion-like head with many thin spokes around a central point. A single long stem with small branches at the base trails down the arm. The linework is thin and uniform in black, with no shading or colour, and the subject sits across the upper arm, with the photo cropped below the chin and above the elbow.

Kieron had his fist around the stem before his nan could tell him to leave it alone. The plant had forced its way up through a crack in the walkway outside flat 47, a single pale head on a stalk that bent like a wrist, and the wind coming off the car park kept snatching at the seeds.

Nan lowered herself onto the upturned crate by the bins, the one she used to shell peas on when the block was new, and told him what her mother had taught her. You had to count the spokes before you blew. Whatever number you got was how many years until the thing you wanted arrived, and you mustn't say it aloud or the wind would pass it on to somebody else.
Kieron counted with his lips moving and lost his place somewhere past nineteen. Then he blew hard, and the seeds lifted in a grey rush over the estate, dropping onto bin lids, the chippy's flat roof and the windscreen of a Vauxhall with one wheel on the kerb. He wanted to know if any would clear the motorway. Nan said they'd land wherever the wind had decided, which was the only honest answer she had ever given him.
When the sun slid behind the tower opposite, he found one seed still caught in the fine hairs of his own forearm, where he'd gripped the stalk. He didn't blow it. He carried it inside like a splinter he meant to keep, and at tea Nan asked what number he'd got. He held up the arm so she could see it, and said he'd tell her in nineteen years.
