Gerbera and feathers on the upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large gerbera-style flower with layered petals and a dotted centre sits on the upper arm, with a cord and two feathers hanging from its lower edge. The petals use soft grey shading and fine outlines, and the feathers are rendered with delicate linework and subtle highlights. The image is a close angled photo of the shoulder and arm, with a navy lace bra strap in the frame and the wearer's face not shown.

Dilys had counted the gerberas twice before the 6.12 pulled in, and still there was one short. Forty stems in the zinc bucket that morning, forty on the sheet she had pinned inside the kiosk. She ran a thumb along the empty rim and looked down the platform, where the wind was pushing a crisp packet towards the footbridge.

The woman who had taken the missing flower did not look like a thief. She had come in off the stairs with a grey coat over one arm and asked for something cheerful, not roses, not lilies, something that looked as if it had decided to be happy. Dilys gave her a pale orange gerbera with its petals wide open, and the woman laughed and said that was exactly it. Then she knotted a grey feather to the stem with a length of waxed cord, threaded two blue beads onto it, and asked Dilys to hold it for her until the late train, because her sister was coming up from Carlisle and would want to see it first.
The late train came and went. At ten to eight Dilys found the stem lying across the bench outside the waiting room, cord still knotted, feather bent but whole. Under the bench a small brown envelope had been pushed flat by someone's heel. Inside, in pencil, was a single line: Tell her the beads were for the birds, not the bunch.
Dilys folded the envelope into her apron pocket and set the gerbera upright in the bucket, where it stood among the others as if it had never left.
