Dandelion made of music notes on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black tattoo shows a dandelion seed head at the left, built from a treble clef and music notes, with more notes breaking away and drifting to the right along a curved path. The linework is bold with some areas of solid black fill and small open note shapes. The ink is set against pale skin, with a dark lace garment at the top edge of the frame.

The lyre string snapped on the third bar, and Thessa swore in the rough Greek of the harbour, the words her mother had forbidden in their house. Hermon did not look up from his planing. She had spent a month on this one. Its arms were cut from a single length of olive, its sound box glued and bound with gut, and the magistrate's daughter was to be married under it at the spring festival. Every note she had tuned seemed to hang in the workshop like pollen, bright and unwilling to settle.

That evening she climbed the hill behind the potters' kilns, where the grass had gone to seed in grey-white heads. She picked one and blew. The seeds lifted in a loose drift and she followed them with her eyes, counting how they caught the light, falling, then lifting again. Hermon's voice came back to her: a tune is only what the wind agrees to carry. She understood then that the lyre was not hers to keep. A merchant from the coast had already offered for it, and she had refused him.

She carried the instrument down at dusk and sent it off with the carter before the gate closed. Next morning, at the well, a boy with a reed pipe was whistling a rising phrase she knew from the lyre's third string, bright and uneven, and he stopped when he saw her staring. He grinned and said it was a song from the far road. Thessa watched the seeds going over the wall in her mind, each one a small note on its way to somewhere she would never be.
